“I have been employed by Pathways of SWPA residential program since June 1, 1998 and have always said I wish I had been employed here sooner. As an LPN who had worked for many years in nursing homes taking care of 30-60 patients at a time, I struggled at first with only 3 individuals (with intellectual and developmental disabilities) to care for. I quickly learned, however, that although they still needed some medical care, that there was so much more to this job. This job was where I was meant to be. I needed the individuals as much as they needed me; this was the missing piece of the puzzle that I was seeking when I worked in nursing homes. There are so many challenges with some of the individuals for whom we provide supports and services but so many rewards as well. There is nothing in the world like seeing these guys and ladies light up because you spend time with them and develop that relationship with them (friendly staff, confidant, problem solver, nurse, activity person, cook, cleaner, etc.). These individuals are my second family. I am in a different position at Pathways now and don’t spend as much time with them as in the past, but one of the highlights of my workday is when I am able to tell them “good morning” or “see you tomorrow, have a good night”. When I am having a bad day for whatever the reason, I simply try to go to visit them to remind me why I work here (this job is not just a paycheck to me-I love working here and being with these individuals). I like the fact that I can make a difference in their lives by the way I support them and the way Pathways supports each and every individual. If there are parts of my job I sometimes don’t enjoy as much, I then remind myself that I am doing this for the individuals.”

“I have worked for Pathways (Rainbows End Learning Center in Washington) for 17 ½ years. I am the Toddler Room Supervisor. I enjoy my job because I have the opportunity to work with young children and watch them grow to Preschoolers. They come to my classroom barely walking or talking and when they leave they are speaking sentences and getting ready to go to the Preschool Program. Over the years I have meet many people and have made many friends that I would have never had the opportunity if it wasn’t for Pathways. Our agency serves children of all ages and abilities. In my opinion we have some of the most dedicated staff that enjoy sharing the lives of the children and adults we serve daily.”
-Tara Owens , Room Support Staff
